A crime scene has been established and is being examined by forensic specialists and specialist police.
Investigations continue but at this stage the man’s death is being treated as suspicious.
Detectives from State Crime Command’s Homicide and Property Crime Squad are working with local police to investigate.
EARLIER: Emergency services are still at the scene of an explosion in Wolgan Street Portland that cost the life of a 58-year-old Portland man.
Wolgan Street remains closed at this time.
Members of the Blue Mountains Bomb Squad are currently securing the scene with a forensic team waiting to investigate.
Police are currently unable to comment but are considering the possibility of foul play.
EARLIER: Tragedy has struck the tight-knit Portland community this morning after a man lost his life in an explosion.
Around 6.30am the man opened a shed door and was catapulted back by a large explosion, which killed him on impact.
Walkers were in the vicinity and were first to come to the man's aid, however, the impact of the explosion was too great and the injured man was unable to be revived.
Emergency services were quick to respond to the call out and the scene of the accident has now been sealed off for further investigation.
The man is well-known in the Portland community.
