But to reach these lofty heights, players have to start somewhere — and that is the grass roots level as a youngster.
The Lithgow Junior Hockey Minkey Little League will provide such a stepping stone and they will present a competition for young players aged from four years to nine years for both girls and boys.
It will be a seven week season where players will be coached with the rules and skills needed for hockey.
Coaches will be working to improve all the players, no matter what their skill level with the focus being on fun and participation.
The competition will be played of a Friday afternoon from 4pm to 5.30pm starting on May 1 and going each week stopping for breaks due to the Queen’s Birthday weekend and the under 15 State championships that will be held in Lithgow.
It will conclude on Friday June 26.
“The competition is designed to introduce hockey to youngsters,” the League’s Alison Luka said.
“No matter how many players turn up of a Friday, they will be made welcome and will be put through skill sessions and games that will last approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
“The teams will be different each week.
“We just ask the children to wear their club socks and shorts-skirts (or whatever they like) and shirts will be given out each week.
“Players are asked to bring a hockey stick, shin pads, mouth guard and water bottle.
“Depending on the feedback and success of this first session of Minkey Little League another session may be run in term three.
“Assistance from parents and coaches both experienced and new would be greatly appreciated, so contact your club or the Junior Association if you are willing to help out.
“Who knows, the program could produce another Australian representative from Lithgow.”
This program will be co-ordinated by the junior association with Alison and Karen Luka being the contacts.
Register your interest with your chosen club or turn up on Friday May 1 at 4pm.
You do not need to be associated with a particular hockey club to come and have a try and you will be given club contacts that will help you out if necessary.
The cost is only $25 for the seven weeks ($20 turf fees and $5 association fee) plus $22.97 (Hockey NSW affiliation fee that includes registrations and insurance).
If there is a second program, the NSW Affiliation will have already been paid.
