Kristy Aylott and Sandy Cox proved the main force for Hot Shots, winning their two sets together 8-1 against Janene Graham and Robyn Patterson of Sluggers.
Aylott also had two good sets in combination with captain Kristy Wyrzykowski when they won 6-3 then 7-2 over Sluggers’ captain Rhonda Thompson and Janene Graham.
Graham, however, played some good tennis throughout the day, despite still battling the flu.
Thompson and Patterson also played well together, making Wyrzykowski and Cox work hard for their 5-4 win in the third set and then turning this result around in the sixth set to bring home Sluggers’ only set of the day with the 5-4 result.
Thank you to Robyn Patterson for filling in for Sluggers and for adding a splash of colour to the court with her trademark tennis skirt.
Match end brought a convincing five set, 38 games win to Hot Shots over Sluggers’ one set, 16 games.
Kristy Aylott was a stand out for Hot Shots and Robyn Patterson rose to the occasion for Sluggers.
Slammers v Slices:
The Slammers versus Hot Shots match was dead even, with each set reversing with the preceding set.
The first two sets came back at 5-4, the first to Slammers with Julie Grant and Margie Lowe just coming out ahead of Averil Charlton and June Kelly and then going back to Slices, when Kim Heath and Averil Charlton overcame Carol Carver and Julie Grant.
Good rallies and multiple deuces were features of the sets.
The remaining four sets each produced a 6-3 result, split evenly.
Julie Grant for Slammers won her remaining two sets 6-3, firstly with Lowe against Charlton and Kelly and then following up with captain Carver against Heath and Charlton of Slices.
Kelly and Charlton played a strategic last set for Slices against Carver and Lowe, wining 6-3, thereby bringing the match result to a three set, 27 games each.
Julie Grant played good solid tennis all day for Slammers and June Kelly was extremely efficient for Slices, particularly with her crosscourt placement and also her frequently effective sideline shots.
The competition is now in recess until the beginning of the new school term, with play resuming on Thursday October 9.
