Homeless in the local community was the subject approached on the night and speakers Father Stephen Sinn SJ and Sgt Darryl Goodwin spoke of the plight of the homeless in the Lithgow region.
Father Steve spoke of his long term work with those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.
Sgt Goodwin explained the issues of the homeless in the local area and his experience in assisting them through police work.
Winters in the area can cause problems for the homeless and Sgt Goodwin identified problems in assistance after hours and how there were less options for emergency accommodation available for men than women.
Father Steve argued strongly that homelessness is a result of poverty, and that he has never met a homeless person who was rich.
His aim is to build some community support for the homeless with local residents, something he has had considerable success with in the past.
The gathering was well chaired by Charlie O’Mahony and there was lively participation and interaction with the speakers by those who attended.
