According to a Lithgow City Council spokesman the indoor pool stage of the aquatic centre is on target for completion and in operation in less than 12 months.
If all goes to plan those keen for a mid winter swim will take the plunge for the first time in June next year.
Among them Deputy Mayor Ray Thompson who says he’ll be among the first to christen the new facility.
Council earlier this year awarded the tender for construction to Icon Building, a company experienced in Aquatic Construction Projects who, council said, have delivered a number of impressive projects to regional NSW councils recently.
Operations Manager Iain Stewart said council is working with Icon Building to ensure minimal disruption to the 2014/15 swimming season, with the outdoor pool still planned to reopen for summer in October 2014.
“It is absolutely wonderful that this facility is finally underway" said Mayor Maree Statham
"This has been a highly anticipated project and it is now happening!"
"Council has aspired and worked for a long time to have such a facility built and it will be a great facility once built and an asset to the community."
“This is an exciting time to be living in the Lithgow area, with the indoor pool just one of a number of large infrastructure projects that Council is currently undertaking” said Mayor Statham.
Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Council's Aquatic Centre Committee, Cr Ray Thompson said Lithgow has been waiting for many years for this facility to be built and the committee was delighted that we are finally seeing it come to fruition.
He said the addition of an indoor pool will have a number of significant benefits to the area, including yearround access to aquatic facilities, promotion of a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, improved usability of the Lithgow Aquatic Centre, provision of entertainment and recreational facilities for youth, and creation of job opportunities.
"I would also like to again pay tribute to our local Member, Paul Toole, for his help to see this project be achieved.
“Without the assistance of the NSW State Government this project would not have occurred for several more years,” Cr Thompson said.
"Construction of the facility is expected to take 12 months, so this time next year I will be looking to do a few laps in the pool myself."
