Mr Toole’s excitement was increased by the fact his son was awarded the local government portfolio – something dear to both their hearts.
Trevor Toole served on Evans Shire Council for 21 years, 16 of them as mayor, while Paul Toole served on Evans Shire for nine years before he had seven years on Bathurst Regional Council.
“Between us we have nearly 40 years in local government,” Trevor Toole said.
He also ran for state and federal politics, but was unable to win a seat in either.
“I obviously wasn’t as successful as Paul,” he conceded with a chuckle.
Mr Toole admitted he was a little surprised to see his son offered a place in cabinet so early in his political career, although he did feel it was inevitable.
“I knew it would happen one day. He has always been a very hard worker for the electorate and I think they have recognised that.
“He is young and fresh, which is what the premier was looking for, but he has many years of experience as well.”
Mr Toole said one of his son’s greatest attributes is his willingness to listen.
“He also thinks things through very carefully before making a decision.
“He doesn’t rush in.
“I would like to congratulate him and tell him how very proud I am of him.”
