Owners Greenspot announced a planned explosive demolition of the Unit 7 and 8 chimney stacks and the Unit 8 boiler will take place in late November while demolition of the Unit 7 boiler is planned for the first quarter of 2022.

Contractor Liberty Industrial commenced decommissioning, demolition and rehabilitation (DDR) works in May 2021 and will conduct the blasting.

Greenspot CEO Brett Hawkins said the greater community can expect the power station to be demolished and cleared in an appropriate way.

"We are committed to all appropriate environmental and safety measures. We've got a fundamental commitment to that and so does Liberty," he said.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming works at the site.

Approval for the use of explosives for the demolition activities is managed by Safe Work NSW and all aspects of the blasting will comply with the relevant legislation requirements.

Extensive specialist explosive and engineering works have been undertaken to ensure safety by minimizing flying debris and ensuring none leaves the site.

There will be a 500m exclusion zone around the collapsed structures. Traffic controls will be implemented along Main St, The Castlereagh Highway and Wolgan Road adjacent to the power station. There may be a short road closure at the time of the blast.

Dust suppression controls will be in place as a result from collapsing structures. The structures will have hazardous material including asbestos, removed and required certificates will be obtained prior to the demolition.

Residents are likely to hear an explosive sound when the blast is initiated. Engineering analysis indicates that vibration and air blast over pressure caused by the blast will be within safe levels. Monitoring will be undertaken.

Access to the site is restricted to Liberty Industrial's authorised personnel only. Security patrols will be in place to ensure intruders do not access the site or breach the 500m exclusion zone.

The airspace above the power station and industrial neighbours is a no-fly zone. Breach of this with drone devices can lead to prosecution.

Due to the complexity of complying with NSW Government Health Orders for such an event, no public viewing points will be provided by Greenspot or Liberty Industrial. The 500m exclusion zone will be in place for everyone's safety. Access to the power station and lands adjacent to the zone will be restricted to authorised personnel only.
