THERE was a time when the most successful national charity fundraiser year after year was the Miss Australia Quest and on many occasions Lithgow had an entrant supported on the cash campaign by the Rotary Club.
Each year the reigning Miss Australia would come to Lithgow for a dinner at the Golf Club where Rotary and our aspirant to the title would hand over their cheque to aid a worthy cause.
On the two day visits Miss Australia would be escorted to points of interest.
This invariably included a visit to the Small Arms Factory where Miss Australia was expected to feign fascination in the production techniques of the L1A1FN or whatever was on line at the time.
Today's Mercury Flashback from the early 80s has our glamorous VIP visitor (name forgotten) with Rotary escort Roy Morris, SAF Manager Graham White and management team member Peter Melrose.
After more than 90 years the Miss Australia Quest faded out in 2000.
