Lithgow Hockey complex hosted the NSW U15 Girls Field State Hockey Championships on June 18,19 and 20, bringing 40 teams and over 500 people.

"It was a really good turn out," Lithgow Hockey Association representative coordinator Adam Whichelo said.

He said everything seemed to go to plan with spectators and players enjoying themselves and braving the cold weather.

"Obviously it's been cold for them but we had the sun out on Saturday morning which was good, everyone was happy," he said.

"We've had no negative feedback in saying it's lousy here or facilities aren't good enough. Everyone I have talked to has been pretty positive with it."

Whichelo said in the lead up to the championships, Council had been helpful in setting up the facility with the fields also in pristine condition.

"The fields are amazing, the grass fields have come up really good, Council has maintained them and they also marked the fields out for us," he said.

He said the event was beneficial for the community as well, with motels booked out and restaurants full.

"I went up town Saturday morning, every cafe looked really busy, all getting smashed.

"The Workies Club, Club Lithgow, Zig Zag Motel, Black Gold Cabins... everywhere booked out, so everyone was benefiting from it," he said.

Lithgow was due to host the state championships in 2020 but due to COVID-19 it was postponed.

"We were meant to hold this last year but everything was put forward another 12 months and that's where we are at now," Whichelo said.

He said Lithgow Hockey Association would like to hold more events like this one, in the future.

"We are in talks with Hockey NSW and they are keen to hold another championships of some sort here, I don't know what the vision is, but basically they do want to get more into country towns and we are more than equipped to hold them," he said.

He also said the association would like to get more juniors involved in hockey.

"We have about 320 members but two years ago we had 500. I think every sport is struggling with numbers at the moment but we would love to have more kids involved and see them coming through the ranks," he said.
