ALL things considered Lithgow Council does a better than reasonable job but it falls down in one vital area - housekeeping in public places.

It's all a bit hit and miss - hit in maintaining parks and gardens but miss where other visitors to our city gather. There are two standouts in ongoing civic neglect and that's pigeon poo pollution, particularly in Cook Plaza, and the unkempt condition of the main lookout area at Hassans Walls.
Pigeon poo is a health and visual hazard in much of the CBD but in sections of Cook Plaza it's at a whole new level of disgusting around the perimeters where it is obvious there hasn't been a hose down in months.
As the column predicted days after the installation the nifty new destination board on the western side is well adorned as is the litter bin and surrounding concrete.
Then there's the perennial problem of Hassans Walls where regular housekeeping has always been too much trouble.
A good start would be some urgent and simple attention with a whipper snipper to deal with the very ugly weed problem.
No respite
TRAVELLERS who hoped the partial re-opening of Bells Line would ease the traffic nightmare in the Upper Mountains was out of luck at the weekend. Once again on Friday and Sunday in particular there were huge traffic snarls between Blackheath and Victoria Pass, at times in both directions.
Silver success
IT wasn't just our woodchoppers and horse and sulky people picking up medals at the Sydney Royal. One of our largely unsung treasures, the Jannei Goat Dairy at Lidsdale picked up a couple of silvers in the cheese section.
Bigger and better?
IT'S been no secret that Bunnings Lithgow have wanted to expand for some time but their last overture for a highway frontage at Bowenfels was knocked back. Now, according to a source within the company, they're planning a shift to a site in Pottery Estate.
The ballot box
THE Lithgow Council elections are still five months away but it's time to consider what you can do for your community with civic representation. The elections in NSW were scheduled for last year but the term was extended because of COVID.
Difficult to see at this stage who would replace Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Ray Thompson and Wayne McAndrew, the Council's most experienced campaigners who have indicated their intention of retiring.
Meantime for the first time in 12 months the next meeting of Lithgow Council will open the public gallery but only for the lucky few; numbers will be limited to the first 15, a number that seems a bit of odd but better than nothing.
