Thousands of brown trout fry and tiger trout, were released into Lake Lyell, Lake Wallace, Portland Millpond, Thompson's Creek Dam and Lake Pillans on Monday, January 11.
The tiger trout stock release is a NSW first.
The fish came from DPI's Gaden Trout Hatchery in Jindabyne.
Wallerawang Central Acclimatisation Society branch secretary Ray Tang said the hatchery was exceptional and approximately 5000 brown trout were released into Lyell, 2500 into Wallace, 500 in Portland and 250 into Pillans.
"1500 tiger trout fingerling were released into Thompson's Creek Dam, we have more tiger trout coming for Lyell and Wallace later this year once they are grown out to a larger size," he said.
"The tiger trout stocking is part of a three year trial for NSW freshwater rec fishing, a historical first for NSW."
Tiger trout are triploid, a sterile hybrid between a female brown trout and a male brook trout, Mr Tang said.
"They do occur occasionally in the wild where brook trout and brown trout co-exist but it is rare."
He said tiger trout were known to be piscivorous, which means they eat fish.
"This makes them an ideal species for controlling pest species such as Redfin and mosquito fish."
Mr Tang said the NSW DPI were trialling tiger trout in Lake Wallace and Lake Lyell for the next few years to monitor changes in Redfin populations.
Tiger trout have been put into Thompson's Creek Dam as a sporting target fish species along with the rainbow and brown trout, with the stockings management closely monitored.
"They will also determine the social and economic advantages of this new species in the region, which years ago were stocked in the USA as a bucket list sporting fish and pest control," Mr Tang said.
