Manchester United have signed former Paris St Germain striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer with the Uruguay international penning a one-year deal, with an option to extend a 12 months.

With United reeling from a 6-1 loss to Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday, the 33-year-old will provide another option for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has been deploying Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood up front.
"Manchester United is one of the greatest clubs in the world, so it is a real honour to be here. I've worked really hard during the time off and I feel eager to compete and represent this incredible club," Cavani, who has won the Golden Boot in both Ligue 1 and Serie A, told the club website.
The Red Devils also signed 27-year-old Brazil left-back Alex Telles from Porto, Sochaux centre-back Willy Kambwala, and teenage wingers Amad Traore and Facundo Pellistri.
Uruguayan Pellistri has signed a five-year deal after completing a move for around 10 million euros ($A16m) from Penarol, while Ivorian Traore will join from Serie A club Atalanta in January.
But defender Chris Smalling has left Old Trafford, making a permanent switch to Roma for 15 million euros ($A24.6m).
Smalling was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2010 and made 323 appearances for United, claiming two Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a Europa League crown.
Arsenal completed the biggest move of transfer deadline day as they secured the 50 million euro ($A82m) signing of 27-year-old Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid.
The Gunners tweeted "Welcome to the Partey!" shortly after Atleti confirmed they had met the valuation for the Ghana international.
Lucas Torreira completed a loan move in the other direction while Frenchman Matteo Guendouzi joined Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin on a season-long loan deal.
Elsewhere, Jack Wilshere was released by West Ham, bringing to an end an injury-hit two seasons at the club.
The 28-year-old managed just 19 appearances since joining from the Arsenal in 2018 and hinted that he had been frozen out by current manager David Moyes.
Everton added goalkeeper Robin Olsen on loan from Roma, and 22-year-old defender Ben Godfrey from Norwich for a reported 25 million pounds ($A45.2m).
31-year-old England international Theo Walcott has left the Toffees though for Southampton, where he made his senior debut as a 16-year-old, on a season-long loan.
Tottenham midfielder Ryan Sessegnon has joined Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim on loan for the rest of the season, while Leeds signed Brazilian winger Raphinha from Rennes on a four-year deal.
Fulham landed Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Denmark centre-back Joachim Anderson from Lyon on season-long deals.
