It is believed that eight people were travelling between the three cars.
Among the injured was a 53-year-old woman who is believed to have been the driver of one of the vehicles who was trapped before being released by emergency services. She suffered chest, pelvic and leg injuries and was airlifted by the Toll Rescue 207 Helicopter to Westmead Hospital. Authorities described her condition as "serious but stable" at the time the helicopter left the scene.
One of the vehicles involved was towing a camper trailer, while another was pulling a box trailer.
Agencies who attended the accident scene included Lithgow Ambulance Paramedics, Lithgow Volunteer Rescue Squad, Lithgow Police, NSW Fire and Rescue, Portland.
The cause of the accident is yet to be determined, however the Castlereagh Highway is expected to remain closed for some time as Accident Investigation Police conduct their enquiries.
