Lithgow City Council advised while the Blast Furnace area was fortunately undamaged, fire embers went through Lake Pillans and completely destroyed the boardwalk infrastructure in December.

Council's director of infrastructure services Jonathon Edgecombe said there were plans to restore the infrastructure and in the meantime a number of measures were in place.

"Barrier boards and mesh were placed along pathways where access was prohibited," he said.

"But these were subsequently vandalised and thrown in the lake and in every instance possible, were promptly replaced by Council."

Mr Edgecombe said the local landcare group and local residents also did what they could to provide water and food for native animals.

"The landcare groups are also doing weed management works as fire affected areas give the chance to weeds to spread.

"Overall, the response from our community in protecting and preserving local assets has been highly commendable," he said.

He said due to the environmentally sensitive nature of the area, a Review of Environmental Factors was undertaken.

"A Fisheries permit has also been obtained to authorise works within the lake," he said.

Mr Edgecombe said the existing boardwalk infrastructure was demolished and a design for a replacement has been sought.

"Documentation has been completed and tenders have been called for construction," he said.

"As part of the tender process, respondents are to propose a project timeline, which will form part of the contract with the successful contractor.

"Following resolution by Council, the contract will be executed and works will commence soon thereafter," he said.

Mr Edgecombe expected works to commence either late 2020 or early 2021 and be completed by June 30, pending any future unexpected weather events or emergencies.
