The mad Hawthorn fan has made regular visits to Bunnings throughout the season for spray paint needed to keep sponsors happy.

Lawson, with the help of dad Andrew and mum Tracy, has created a mini MCG brandishing the same logos as AFL grounds during the COVID-19 lockdown at his family's property in Warrnambool, south-west Victoria.

The grass is cut every two weeks and the paint work - AFL Toyota 2020 premiership season on a wing, Coles in the centre square, Telstra on the forward 50 line and Rebel sport in the goal square - fixed up.

The Chows have followed the Hawks' original 2020 fixture, playing weekly games, and have now upgraded the oval's signage for what would have been the start of the finals series this weekend.

Lawson, 7, completes his chores to ensure his footy ground is game day-ready.

"It is just a bit of fun. He does his jobs during the week, earns his pocket money and goes to Bunnings with his mum and gets his spray paint," Andrew said of their family's isolation project.

"He comes up with the design and Trace does the spray painting which is good fun."

Andrew said Lawson, who had planned to play Auskick at Warrnambool this year, was passionate about the game.

"He's a real fan of football and a Hawks supporter and it's just evolved," he said.

"Every weekend we play the season - he is always Hawthorn. He studies the game and the first one he wanted was a centre circle and we also played Indigenous round ages ago."

Tracy said it was enjoyable creating memories with Lawson.

"I'm not an artist, it's pretty rough. I don't have a stencil," she joked of her spray paint designs.

"But he is always out here rain, hail or shine."

Lawson said he was always going to be a Hawthorn supporter.

"My dad barracks for Hawthorn. I would have to sleep with the dog (if I didn't go for them)," he joked.

As for who is the better player? Lawson reckons he has his dad covered.

"I am way better probably," he said.

The Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School student said the 15th-placed Hawks had struggled in 2020.

"We nearly beat Port Adelaide though," he said.

"But we didn't get any free kicks in the last quarter."

Lawson "went to Jarryd Roughead's last game" and rates forward Jack Gunston as his favourite player and first-year defender Will Day as the best of the Hawks' younger brigade.
