The appeal target is $1 million with the money set to help support Australians impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Money raised will be given to respected charities Oz Harvest, the Salvation Army and Beyond Blue.
"Millions of Australians are doing it really tough right now, both financially and emotionally, and the services of these important organisations are in greater demand than ever," said NSW Environment Minister Matt Kean.
The appeal will run until February 21 next year.
In December last year, Lithgow's Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) notched up an impressive 9,201,163 containers returned according to an EPA spokesperson at the time.
Eligible bottles and cans can be donated at any participating Return and Earn facility, with each container raising 10 cents for the appeal.
Return and Earn has raised more than $10.4 million for charities and community groups since it was launched in late 2017.
