Samantha Charlton is Lithgow's crochet queen.

While she makes the regular winter woolies through her business 'Samsta's Crochet Creations', Samantha has a passion for crocheting cars, in particular the iconic Volkswagen Type 1 Kombi Van.

"I do the normal scarves, beanies, things like that but I also make teddy bears and Kombis.

"People often go 'What you crochet cars?' and I say 'Yeah I literally do crochet cars'," she said.

When asked what her favourite thing to crochet was, she said "definitely the Kombis".

"It is the Kombis... I have a love hate relationship with those," she laughed.

Samantha said it roughly took her a week to make a Kombi because she had to visualize the car and make sure everything fit in.

"Sometimes customers will ask for a certain pattern so I will follow it as much as I can but I have to tweak it a little bit so it fits properly, as long as the customer likes it in the end, that's all that matters," she said.

She said she sourced her materials from Spotlight and liked to use different colours and try different styles when making items.

"I do lots of colours but I pretty much do whatever the customer wants," she said.

Samantha's love for crocheting began when her great grandmother taught her when she was 14 years-old.

"I'd actually never really thought of doing anything with it but people really liked my amigurumi which is the little toys," she said.

"So I started on that and then it just kept going from then on and people started buying some stuff."

She said she loved crocheting because of the patience and end result.

"Just the reward that comes after making the customer happy, it's a nice feeling," she said.

Pre-Covid Samantha was selling her creations at local markets as well as online.

"I'm hoping to get back out to the markets again soon but people can contact me through Samsta Crochet Creations on Facebook," she said.
