The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a severe weather warning early on Friday morning with a coastal trough moving from northern to southern NSW during the coming days.
"This trough is expected to deepen and gradually shift southwards, increasing rainfall along the central and southern parts of the coast and adjacent ranges during Friday and over the weekend," the warning said.
"For some areas, intense rainfall rates and gusty winds are possible with thunderstorm activity."
Heavy rainfall which may lead to flash flooding is possible in the Blue Mountains.
Rainfall already recorded by 7.30am on Friday:
- Bathurst 3.2mm
- Lithgow 18.2mm
- Mudgee 2.8mm
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move your car under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
- Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
- Unplug computers and appliances.
- Avoid using the phone during the storm.
- Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
