Lithgow Musical Society has obtained the rights to perform one of the world's most popular musicals, Les Misérables.

Musical Director Rae Burton and the entire cast of the Lithgow Musical Society say they are looking forward to returning to their 'home' after productions at Lithgow High School in May last year and the well-received production of Queen and Ben Elton's "We Will Rock You" at St Pat's in November.

"Les Mis" is the longest running musical in history, being continuously in professional production since 1985 in London with multiple seasons on Broadway, a 30th anniversary tour of Australia and the award winning movie starring Hugh Jackman. After a 19 year absence the show will mark the reopening of the Union Theatre.

The show features the song "I Dreamed a Dream" along with other iconic tunes such as "Do You Hear the People Sing" and "One Day More".

Based on Victor Hugo's classic novel the show tells the story of a good man's fight for what is right against the relentless pursuit of an obsessive police officer, Les Misérables is set in post-revolutionary 19th Century France against a backdrop of a student uprising seeking to win a better life for all the citizens of Paris.

An information night will be held at St. Patrick's hall on Monday January 20th from 7:30 pm where people can find out more about the show.

Auditions for adult and child lead roles will be held at the St. Pats hall on Thursday, January 20 (male roles) and Monday, January 27 (female Roles).

Anyone interested in auditioning need to attend the information night to book an audition spot.

Rehearsals start on Thursday, January 30 and the show will be staged from May 17 to 30 this year.
