December sees the early rounds of Championship Pairs being contested for 2020, due to the full program forecast for next year.
Round one Pairs games had many new combinations compared to previous years, with some more experienced players teaming up with newer men from the Thursday Twilights and creating a lot of interest.
Gil Mendosa and Garry Sutherland were drawn against Ken Bernard and Richard Forbes.
Winning the first eight ends and getting into a handy lead of 13-0, Bernard and Forbes looked set for an upset win.
Sutherland and Mendosa started to hit their straps and by 16 ends had evened the score at 15 all.
The last 5 ends were dominated by Mendosa and his partner resulting in an easy 27-15 win.
The strong pairing of Col Wotton and Kevin Shorney were too consistent for father and son, Ted and Brian Healey and cruised to an easy 26-13 win.
New pairing, Lionel Johnstone and Ray Sharwood couldn't match their opponents Al Kenniff and Stan Campbell, going down 18-35.
Conceding multiples was a major factor in the new comers defeat and they will get better.
Eight all after seven ends had Wayne Allan and Joe Banasiak well in the game against John Perry and Garry Bender but they were unable to maintain their effort and ultimately went down 12-34.
Bob Kiernan and Warren Kennedy had a great weekend by defeating Jeff Brown and Richie Bilby 30-17 on Saturday and backing up on Sunday to account for Barry Perry and Col Quince in a very one sided match.
Perry and Quince were in the game after 11 ends but couldn't win another end to go down 12-30.
While the Pairs are progressing through the early rounds, the Club Fours have reached the final stages.
Jeff Madden's "left handers" plus Gil Meudosa won their way through to the final with a relatively easy win over Athol Roach, Stan Campbell, Kevin Shorney and Mike Johnson.
Conceding several multiples; 2 threes, 1 four and a five didn't help their cause and allowed the "lefties" to go through to the final against Scott Vander Draay, Jim Kelly, Mick Hughes and Frank Mierczak.
This final will be played next Saturday and promises to be a great match.
