Round 7 of the Lithgow Table Tennis Association Summer competition produced two very different results, with Grippers and Smashes battling to the last rubber, while Spinners put Loopers to the sword for a comprehensive victory.
Grippers took an early 4-1 lead over Smashes and were never headed. Smashes came back to tie it at 8-all just past the halfway point, but Grippers went into the doubles with a handy 12-10 edge. Smashes took the first doubles 2-1 to be only 13-12 down but Grippers held their nerve to snatch a tight second doubles rubber, also 2-1, to run out winners, 15-13.
Shane Eagle (5-2) had best results for Grippers, followed by Linda Kappos (5-3), while Lou Kappos struggled somewhat to finish at 2-5.
Only Matt Kappos (4-3) could return a positive record for Smashes, with both Leon Rust (3-4) and Sharnie Roberts (3-5) having a mixed night.
Spinners also jumped away to a 4-1 lead in their encounter with Loopers. Loopers looked like they might make a match of it when they got back to trail only 5-3 but it would be as close as they would get. Spinners tore through the last six singles rubbers by a total of twelve games to four to sew the match up, 17-7.
Spinners' Malcolm Jeffries produced the best record of the night at 6-1, while Riza Wiradi (6-3) won all of his rubbers 2-1 and substitute Sean Jenkins chipped in with 5-3.
All of the Loopers side found the going tough, with Mark McAulay returning 3-5, Roy Barlow 2-6 and Michael Wood also 2-6.
Charolais had the bye.
Pointscore: Grippers 22, Charolais 20, Spinners 20, Loopers 16, Smashes 15.
This week's matches: Round 8; Charolais v Grippers. Smashes v Spinners. Loopers bye.
