The award, presented at the Lithgow and District Family History Society's Tank Street premises, went to Lorna Fitzpatrick.
The winning essay was on her great grandmother Mary Polson.
The topic of the essay for 2019 was "My Favourite Rascal".
Mary defied the convention of the time when she refused to resign her position as a teacher when she married James Parks in 1884.
Lorna's essay will be printed in full in the Society's October journal.

Lorna was presented with her award certificate at the presentation and receives one year's free membership of the Lithgow and District Family History Society.
The runner-up was Ros Nolte who received a highly commended certificate for her creativity in submitting an essay that was not about a person.
Ros wrote about her beloved cat who was her favourite rascal.
