THERE comes a time when the community has a right to demand to know what's going on, even if the issue is uncomfortable for some.

And that brings us once again to the subject of the increasingly dilapidated former TAFE college in Mort Street.
It's surely time there was a defining public statement on just what, if anything, is really intended. and, just as importantly, when.
The community deserves nothing less as this unfortunate saga drags on from year to year.
On a main traffic route through the city from the Bells Line this really is an embarrassment and a black mark on our image as a successful Tidy Town.
It has been this way for far too long.
Previous owners allowed this - one of the CBD's biggest buildings - to deteriorate.
The current owners have said little since some vague plans at the time of purchase years ago.
So we're entitled to ask, what now?
The current status can not be allowed to go on indefinitely.
Opportunity knocks
IT'S been suggested before but a lot of people think it's such a good idea that it's worth repeating in case someone in authority cares to take notice and run with it. With Energy Australia determined to knock down the Wang power station there's a once in a lifetime awesome opportunity to retain the massive cooling tower for a truly spectacular mural. Consider the success of the Portland silo art works. Far cheaper than pulling the thing down and the chance to create a truly unique local landmark. Is anyone in Council or EA listening before it's another case of opportunity lost?
The (Really) Big Chill
THE forecasters got it right when they warned we were in for some of the bleakest weather in years. The three day big chill across the region was a memorable one but it was obvious on Sunday around Lithgow's Main Street that blizzards are good for tourism business. Visitors coming by train were making the most of the snow while it lasted.
Just up the road at Mt Boyce it was officially the coldest August Saturday in 20 years so you can bet we weren't far behind. (It must have been bordering on child cruelty to have an inter school hockey encounter on the water based Glanmire complex on Friday).
Danger zone
AS previously warned, kangaroos are an increasing hazard for both themselves and motorists on local roads at present. The roos have even less road sense than many people and caution is needed in the early morning and evenings in Lithgow Street opposite Valley Plaza where there was another road kill on Saturday, at least the fourth in 10 days.
