Portland itself has a rich and vibrant history, a fusion of heritage, mining, manufacturing and farming. On the back of the cement works and other industry, the town grew swiftly and at one stage the region had enough people that it supported a bath house, ice skating rink, Olympic swimming pool and even a casino.
These days Portland supports a more relaxed lifestyle and while the town's population has shrunk to around 2500 people, local businesses continue to thrive with delicious produce, quality products and of course friendly and genuine customer service.

Declared a town in 1906, many organisations and businesses recently celebrated significant milestones as they continue to be vital to the Portland community including the Portland RSL sub-branch which celebrated their 100th Anniversary in 2018, and the Portland Bowling Club who recently celebrated 70 years of support and gatherings.
Of course it's not just strong historical roots which make Portland the vibrant town it is, new generations and innovative ideas continue to make the town stronger. The annual Spring Fair, complete with it's "Show 'n' Shine", markets, rides and food stalls, always brings the town together, while the Portland Easter Festival makes for a great day out with jumping castles, face-painting, crafts and more.
