The Barbs, CSU and Portland have been dominating most of the New Era season with easy wins over the Bears ladies but eight rounds into the competition the mighty Bears have let out a roar.

"I'm so proud of our team's effort, everyone played their hearts out.

"We haven't won a game since late last year so it's been a long time coming," Bears captain Jasmine Spittles, said.

She said despite narrow losses in previous games it was an honour to win their first game at home.

"It gave us the confidence we needed, we have all been training so hard and it's finally paid off.

"We deserve this win," she said.

Orange opened the scoring in the first half with Leah Draper finding a hole in the Bears defence to cross the try line, but her side was unsuccessful in their conversion.

Bears were unfortunate to lose Paige Gallagher to a hand injury leaving just one set of fresh legs on the bench.

"We knew we had to push hard with only one sub after a hurt player and we did," Spittles said.

The girls hit back with a perfect grubber kick that saw Orange being tagged resulting in a line drop out.

Bears newcomer Andrea Savage took advantage of the situation gripping the ball and headed to the try line placing it between the posts for an easy kick set up.

Kaitlyn McLaughlin made the conversion kick pushing the Bears up by two points at half time.

Heading into second half the Bears remained eager to secure their win, keeping Orange out.

With close calls Savage and Tash McCann chased down hard to prevent any further chances from the Barbs until the last buzzer.

Spittles said her team should be proud of their efforts and she was hungry for another home win this Thursday, July 11 when they take on CSU Blue.
