The in-form Ramsden held off the challenge of countryman Rorey Hunter to win the men's race in three minutes 44.41 seconds on Wednesday, while Griffith led from gun to tape to win the women's 1500m in 4:12.53.

While the times were solid rather than scintillating, they will still earn a huge swag of ranking points under the complex new qualifying system in place for the Tokyo Olympics as they were achieved at a biennial continental championships.

"All I really wanted was the win; I wasn't worried about the time and I'm just happy with the performance," said Ramsden, who - along with Griffith - is well-placed to gain a spot in the Australian squad for the world championships in Doha beginning in late September.

"It didn't feel like a quick track and I knew Rorey would be there pushing it so I knew I'd have to work hard on the last lap."

Ramsden will now head to Europe to link up with his Melbourne Track Club teammates.

Powerhouse Edward Osei-Nketia - who was the subject of a recent tug of war between New Zealand and Australia - edged out local Jake Doran to win the men's 100m in 10.34.

Osei-Nketia eventually decided last month to represent New Zealand, the land of his birth, despite spending several years at school in Canberra.

"Everybody that had my back here knew that I could do it, but I kind of didn't trust myself," said the 18-year-old Osei-Nketia, who is also a very promising rugby prospect.

"But in the racing today I trusted myself even more and this is the result that I get."

Zoe Hobbs completed the sprint double for New Zealand by winning the women's 100m in 11.56, with Australian Naa Anang second in 11.67.

Two-time Commonwealth Games medallist Kelsey-Lee Barber from Australia smashed her personal best with 65.61m to claim gold in the women's javelin.
