Former Western NSW Mariners defender Ellie Carpenter bowed out the FIFA Women's World Cup on Sunday morning when she and her Matildas teammates lost to Norway in penalties in the round of 16 match.
The game went to extra-time after Elise Kellond-Knight's incredible goal from a corner kick late in the second-half cancelled out Isabell Herlovsen's first-half strike, which give Norway an earlier 1-0 lead.
And just before the break in extra-time, Alanna Kennedy saw red.
After 30 minutes of extra-time the teams couldn't be separated and the match was headed for a penalty shoot-out.
It was a disastrous start for Australia, with captain Sam Kerr and Emily Gielnik missing their penalties.
Steph Catley did score her penalty, but it was too little too late as Ingrid Engen scored Norway's fourth penalty to win the match.
