Boomerang Bags was started in 2013 in Burleigh Heads by two women who were tired of seeing the plastic waste caused by single use shopping bags, so they decided to sew recycled bags out of donated fabric to give away free throughout their community.

Lithgow Boomerang Bags first held an open day at Lithgow Library in 2018 and are now returning to the library on Friday, June 21 from 10.30am to 2.30pm to celebrate their first birthday with another sew-in and morning tea.
The group is looking for more volunteers and you don't need to be able to sew, because there are other jobs to do like cutting and pinning, but you can learn to use the sewing machine and overlocker if you want.
"Volunteer groups make a big impact on our community, and there is great enjoyment in being part of these groups," Lithgow City Council mayor Cr Ray Thompson said.
