Fortunately, Mr Sowerby was successfully treated and has kindly agreed to accept another invitation to address the garden club on Monday, June 3 at 2pm.
It isn't often that someone with direct family links to the first settlers comes along and the members of the garden club are looking forward to this visit from Brett Sowerby, the (many times) great grandson of James Sowerby, who produced illustrations for Sir Joseph Banks when he returned from New Holland (Australia).
READ MORE:
James was educated at the Royal Academy of Arts and became a botanical illustrator. Later he became a publisher and natural historian.
Consequently James produced the first monograph of the flora of Australia, entitled 'A Specimen of Botany of New Holland'. James Sowerby's illustrations were regarded as being highly accurate, detailed and with natural colouring.
Members of Lithgow Garden Club anticipate a most interesting meeting and invite those who have an interest in early Australian history, and who would like to attend to hear Mr Sowerby's presentation, to come along with this meeting at 2pm on June 3 at the Uniting Church Parish Hall, Bridge Street. Cost will be $3
