Since first European settlement and the arrival of industry in the valley the waterway has been regarded as little more than a convenient drain with no appreciation of the environmental potential.
Some years ago under a previous administration Council considered a suggestion for a system of weirs to create a 'proper' and permanent stream, something like a mini version of the Nepean at Penrith.
That went nowhere but the present Council program perhaps indicates a new awakening to complement the neat cycle path and walkway.
Downstream of the Geordie Street crossing also has a lot of potential.
It's also pleasing to note the current work including plantings around the perimeter of the old Hermitage mine site; nice start but much still to be done with that eyesore.
All that glows
LITHGLOW weekend is just about with us again and fittingly the focal point will be on our very unique landmark Blast Furnace Park.
Other sites also go aglow and it would be nice to see some of our business premises, including big operators, that don't normally shed any light after dark getting involved to add to the glowful occasion at least for one night. The Foundations at Portland will also be involved with a light show centred on the mural-adorned silos.
A little dab of paint
WE know our Council is cash strapped - they've told us so - but the fading finances can't be so parlous that we can't afford a can of paint to tart up the ratty timber street furniture around Lithgow's CBD.
A reader recently offered to pay for the paint to create a more pleasing hue on the gloomy bollards at Cook Street Plaza so perhaps we can build on that. We surely don't need to look so shabby.
..and another thing
STILL on Council real estate and there's a pressing need for maintenance on the only shelter shed on Lithgow's Glanmire Park. At present it's a grubby shell with all of the timber seating gone and fascia boards missing from around the roof line. In short, quite a sad picture of negect on a great civic asset.
