A day where we take the time to give thanks and reflect on the ultimate sacrifice so many of our forefathers and their families gave, in order for us to live the lives we do today.
As Australians we remember in many different ways the traditions and symbols of ANZAC - the red poppy, the going down of the sun, the Ode and the Last Post, the slouch hat and even our Anzac biscuits- reminders of a time in History when we became a Nation.
It is the day when we recognise the supreme sacrifice made by so many, when our thoughts go to those men and women who are currently serving on and behind the frontlines of peacekeeping operations around the world. To the servicemen and women, friends and families past and present THANK YOU.
There are simply no words to acknowledge the sacrifices you make, every day. It is our duty to ensure the memory of these soldiers, that their spirit which became the Aussie character, lives on in our children and for generations to come. Show your support and your gratitude at one of the many local commemorative or dawn services this ANZAC day.
Drought
As I am sure you're aware, NSW is facing one of the driest periods on record with more than 99 per cent of the state currently affected by drought. Despite some recent rainfall, we know that our farmers, their families and many of our rural and regional communities are continuing to struggle with the ongoing dry conditions.
The NSW Government continues to support our farmers, with more than $1 billion of drought assistance currently available to our primary producers. To ensure that farmers are getting the assistance they need, we are also continuing to review support measures and monitor conditions across the state very closely.
While the region seems to be taking small steps to recovering from one of our driest periods ever, other regions aren't quite as lucky. There are still farmers that need our support, and you can contribute too. There are various charities, fundraisers and organisations that are set up to help our farmers.
Donating to these organisations, or more importantly, continuing to buy local and regional produce, helps to support our businesses, ensures continuing employment and keeps our dollars in our local community.
Transport for our veterans
The NSW Government will extend the Gold Opal Card to all NSW veterans who have sustained permanent disability during service from next month. It is important the Government continues to support those who serve our country. Our defence men and women provide the ultimate public service in keeping Australia safe.
From next month, any ex-member of the defence force who acquires a disability in a training exercise or while serving here in Australia will soon be eligible for a Gold Opal card. Travel on public transport to and from Anzac Day events is free for current and former Australian Defence Force personnel in uniform, wearing their medals, or with proof of military service. Veterans' families and carers also travel free.
