A man is being airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after an incident on the Mitchell Highway which has closed the road.

Two vehicles collided at about 11.20am on Tuesday and emergency services were called to the scene, which is at the intersection of Pretty Plains Road and the highway, about 30 kilometres west of Bathurst.

Central West Police District inspector Dave Harvey said an elderly man was in a serious condition, but was unaware of the condition of anyone else involved in the incident, or even how many people were in either vehicle at the time the cars collided.

The road was closed to allow the helicopter to land, with traffic reportedly banked up for kilometres in both directions.
It's unknown what time the road will be re-opened, and motorists should avoid the area if at all possible.
