That's according to the Australian Taxation Office's latest release on the average and median incomes for each postcode in the Central West.

The ATO data showed residents with postcode 2800 had the highest average and median taxable incomes for the year 2016-17 compared with those living in areas with postcodes 2795, 2830, 2790 and 2850.

Lithgow

Postcode 2790 represents Lithgow as well as Bowenfels, Clarence, Cobar Park, Cullen Bullen, Hampton, Hartley, Lidsdale, Little Hartley, Lowther, Marrangaroo, Rydal and Sodwalls.

Their average and median taxable incomes for the year 2016-17 were $54,202 and $42,751 respectively.

It was calculated on the basis of 7,357 residents who filed their tax returns with the ATO.

The average and median taxable incomes for the year 2013-14 were $54,034 and $40,538 respectively.

The average income in 2016-17 grew less than one per cent on 2013-14.

Mudgee

Postcode 2850 represents Mudgee as well as the towns of Hargraves, Havilah, Hill End, Ilford, Lue, Running Stream, Turill, Twelve Mile, Ulan, Wilbetree, Windeyer, Wollar and Yarrawonga.

Their average and median taxable incomes for the year 2016-17 were $54,571 and $41,021 respectively.

It was calculated on the basis of 9647 residents who filed their tax returns with the ATO.

The average and median taxable incomes for the year 2013-14 were $53,699 and $38,567 respectively.

The average income in 2016-17 grew 1.6 per cent on 2013-14.

The ATO said profession with the highest income was surgeon, with a national average taxable income of $394,866. 

Anaesthetists filled the second spot with an average income of $367,343 and internal medicine specialists came in third with an average income of $299,378.
