Two ant bed tennis courts, a wood and iron clubhouse and a well-kept hedge.
That was the humble beginnings for what is now Club Lithgow, which is celebrating a centenary of providing the people of the city with club activities, dining and entertainment and is home to the Lithgow City Bowling Club.
Robert Richie compiled a history of the club for the centenary milestone and he noted that prior to 1919 the area where today's modern clubhouse and three full-size bowling greens sits people "took part in social and inter-club tennis matches with an occasional game of iron or rope quoits against the nearby Pottery Club".
"When weather did not permit tennis to be played, members spent the leisure hours playing solo, euchre or crib."
Early in 1919 a notice appeared in the Lithgow Mercury inviting any interested men to attend a meeting called specifically to consider the formation of a Lawn Bowls Club in Lithgow.
