The couple established their nursery in the Tarana Valley in 1976 when there was nothing but a bare block and a tin shed.

Elizabeth said Allan had found what he considered to be the perfect cool climate for a retail in nursery when they relocated from Castle Hill in Sydney.

"There was much work to be done, but the picturesque mountain setting in Tarana was exactly what he was looking for," she said.

After many years the couple formed a devoted following of Lithgow gardeners who bought the nursery's signature, high quality local plants to fill their own.

"We also sell to gardeners across NSW who would often drive hundreds of kilometres to seek inspiration for our display gardens and tap into our knowledge," Elizabeth said.

After a long career of serving keen gardeners across the Central West and beyond, it has become the end of an era for the couple.

Allan said it had been an absolute honour to serve the gardening community for so many years.

"We've held off retirement for as long as possible because we absolutely love what we do," he said.

He also said that while it would be sad to close their doors, there had been many rewards over the years in business.

"A customer told us recently that we have the most beautiful little nursery in the whole of Australia, which was so gratifying after all the hard work we've put in," Allan said. 

With the nursery's doors set to close soon, those who wish to get their hands on plants from the last ever crop of Ross Conifers garden stock, will have until early May to visit the nursery.
