It seems things have started to heat up in the baking department for this year's Lithgow Show with a number of contestants talking up finesse when it comes to baking the perfect scone.

La Salle Academy's Year 9 Agriculture class is the current reigning scone making champion team.

They are taught by scone master Dave Cam, who is confident this year's class can defend La Salle's title.

"We've rallied the troops, and will continue the tradition after last year's Year 9's won, I'm confident this years' Ag class can take the mantle," he said.

Mr Cam said, when it came to scone making, it was all about the cut of the scone, not about the mix.

"In saying that, we also use our own eggs which come from our La Salle chooks, so the scones will be fresh as," he said.

Giving La Salle a run for their money is amateur scone maker and Calare MP Andrew Gee, and confident scone maker Cr Cassandra Coleman.

Cr Coleman placed second for her scones at the 2019 Rydal Show, which she described as "like winning first place", and said she will take Mr Gee up on his challenge after he threw down the gauntlet at a previous public announcement at the Three Tree Lodge.

"I will be entering the Lithgow Show and Andrew is saying he's got a secret recipe, so I can say I look forward to seeing an improvement on the last batch," she said.

Cr Coleman also said she was happy for anyone else to win but Mr Gee.

"I'm putting my best scone forward to ensure I beat Andrew," she said.

In his defense Mr Gee claimed competitive scone making was a lot tougher than first meets the eye.

"Rydal Show was my first competition and I learned a lot from it. Since then, I’ve had a number of people slip me their secret recipes," he said.

He also said Cr Coleman did well at Rydal and she's come out with some fighting words ahead of the Lithgow Show.

"As for me, I think I’ll let my scones do the talking.

"You’re only as good as your last batch, and it’s a fine line between success and fame in scone baking, so it’s game on for Lithgow," he said.
