Recently Lithgow athletes competed at a Zone carnival in Glenbrook which saw 30 young contenders advance to Dubbo and compete in the Regional carnival on February 2 and 3.

From the Regional carnival 16 outstanding athletes made it through to compete at State, the highest level for Little Athletics clubs.

Lithgow Little Athletics Club president Phil Wells said it was the largest amount of athletes Lithgow had ever seen go through to state.

"It's awesome, this is the State competition and they'll be up against other regions, all of NSW," he said.

The sporting talents will compete in several track and field events including runs, hurdles, shot put, discuss, javelin, long jump, high jump, triple jump and more.

Wells said the kids had been putting in the hard yards leading up to the competition.

"They have been training hard, training generally once a week plus their competition day, they're going really well," he said.

He also said they had done well so far this year for a small club and he was proud of them.

"We've only got 120 people and 16 of those are going to State, that's an amazing effort.

"The kids generally do well at their competitions but this year they've just excelled and there's a bit of new blood in the club.

"They've done more than what we expected them to do which is just really fantastic," he said.

Wells also said Lithgow Athletic Club looked to get a senior club up and running in the near future.

"It means that anyone can come and join and hopefully that will add on and even the kids that are 17 this year that can't compete in Little A's next year can continue on with the senior club," he said.
