VISITORS to Lithgow at the weekend must have wondered just what sort of weird community they’d wandered into. Or were they hallucinating?

Nope. The weird and wonderful were popping up all over town including the CBD like escapees from some mad hatter’s tea party — or in some cases a re-run of the Mad Max series.
It looked like some sort of feral invasion but it was really all innocent fun.
Those denizens of fantasy land were in town taking part for a promotional shoot around town for April’s Ironfest.
And after our past experience we wouldn’t be surprised if some of these willing wonders dress up like this every day.
Cash splash
WITH the pre-election cash splash going on all over the country lately it would be nice to score a little grant to replace that dreadful mid city rusted Armco eyesore at the Sandford Avenue bridge. There’s apparently just a fistful of dollars involved, chicken feed when it comes to pork barrelling, but our cash strapped council says there’s no priority for expenditure as it’s ónly cosmetic’. Problem is there’s plenty of ‘just cosmetic’ issues impacting on our entire local government area.
A little PR is welcome
A few years back Lithgow police had an open air display at the Lithgow Show where the Highway Patrol vehicles in particular were a popular attraction with little and big kids. It was a good public relations exercise and an all too rare interaction between police and public.
This year’s Show is fast approaching so perhaps the cops can come up with a welcome repeat performance. Good opportunity to show off their flash new BMW pursuit cars as well. And not just the police; the Show would welcome displays by other community and government organisations as well.
The dark side
WHEN the street lights failed again in much of the Lithgow CBD at the weekend it highlighted just how gloomy some of our Main Street premises are at night. It really was a dismal scene and not helped by the reluctance of some of our biggest business premises to throw a little light on the overnight streetscape.
