A Portland man has been ordered to carry out 100 hours of community service after filming himself running over a kangaroo on Mount Panorama.
Nicholas Robert Summers, 20, was charged with committing an act of cruelty on an animal after police were shown a Snapchat video he created in 2018.
The video showed Summers driving on Conrod Straight, Mount Panorama, during the evening. A mid to large size kangaroo was hopping on the roadway.
According to the police report presented to Lithgow Local Court, the driver is heard to say “Thinks he can do a lap of the Mountain, not on my watch” before accelerating and chasing the eastern grey, including moving onto the incorrect side of the road in pursuit.
The kangaroo was hit by the vehicle and was seen to fall over, tumbling along the roadway, before the footage ended.
A copy of the video, which was posted on the social media platform Snapchat, was provided to police by an informant.
During an interview with Lithgow Police on October 13 last year, Summers said he had seen the kangaroo get up and hop away following the incident.
