Hyde Park on the Lett River at Hartley is a delightful and safe spot for family outings but these days only the brave or the foolish should venture into its charms.
Unless you have a hefty off road 4WD — or perhaps a tractor — don’t risk it. The access track from Mid Hartley Road is so badly eroded that it’s virtually impassable.
Nearby Hartley residents are regularly this summer being called on, even at night, to rescue stranded motorists, often with small children.

The site is officially Crown Land but according to locals the management and maintenance of the area is in the hands of Lithgow Council..
It’s the peak season for outdoor activity and residents want Council to carry out some urgent road work or erect signage warning ‘suitable only for 4WDs’.
They’ve extended an invitation to our Mayor to check it out — but take a survival kit.
Distraction
STILL in the Hartley area and it’s time someone removed a badly damaged car off an embankment on Hartley Valley Road on a dangerous section of Browns Gap. It’s been there for some time, still with number plates, and a serious distraction for motorists unfamiliar with the road. Some are even pulling up to check if there’s anyone inside. The wreck was still there at the weekend.
Uninspiring
NOW here’s an offer you can bet they’ll refuse. A correspondent is so appalled by the grim brown bollards around Lithgow’s Cook Plaza precinct that he’ll happily pay for the paint for a more civilised colour. We’re betting his money is pretty safe but have his contact details..
..but there’s more
BUT wait, there’s more. The Blue Bird Cafe coffee club members who frequent that area say it’s not only the bollards that need some new paint. The white pedestrian crossing markings disappear against the new concrete in certain light creating an obvious danger. Would café society lie about something like that?
