The Lithgow Valley Film Society will be hosting ‘Michael Powell’ presents two classic British movies this weekend.
The first film is ‘The Edge of the World’ (1937), a classic starring John Laurie and Belle Chrystall.
The story is based on the depopulation of the Scottish archipelago of St Kilda. The title of the film is a reference to the expression Ultima Thule, coined by Virgil. One by one the young people leave for greater opportunities on the mainland, making it harder to follow the old ways of life there.
The second film is ‘Stairway to Heaven’ (1946) (AKA ‘A Matter Of Life and Death’, starring David Niven and Kim Hunter. Airman Niven miraculously survives a plane crash and meets the love of his life. Originally released in the USA in an abbreviated version, this is the fully restored version.
The screenings will be held on Friday, February 1 at 10.30am and Sunday, February 3 at 2pm at the film society’s cinema on Main Street.
