The brides were twin sisters, Denise and Sandra Scarr, dressed identically for the occasion.
“Being twins, we always dressed the same growing up, so we continued on for the wedding,” Denise said.
Their husbands were Trevor Boyden and Ken Young.
The wedding was quite the event, featured in detail in the pages of the Lithgow Mercury.
“This was the first marriage of twins for the Reverend Roland Mackay and they were the first and probably only twin girls born in the old Brighton Cottage Hospital at Oakey Park Lithgow,” Trevor said.
On Saturday, December 22, Denise and Trevor returned to Hoskins Church (they now make their home in Wyong) and renewed their vows after 50 years.
“It started off as a bit of a joke really,” Denise said.
It was a joke by one of Trevor’s nieces, who lives in Lithgow. But, as these things sometimes do, it built steam until they had a renewal ceremony organised in the gardens of the church in which they were wed, just one day after their 50th wedding anniversary.
“We always knew we wanted to celebrate the anniversary, and this is how it turned out,” Trevor said.
Trevor and Denise met through a friend of Trevor’s, who set them up on a blind date.
“It was probably my first time [on a blind date],” Trevor said.
“And it turned out to be the last.”
Trevor was working for the railway while Denise was working at a pyjama factory called Honeysetts as a sewing machinist.
The couple had 40 guests along with plenty of sunshine to celebrate their 50 golden years together.
