And it is indeed Christmas bearing down on us at a rapid rate.
Christmas conscious shopkeepers are going to lengths to brighten up for the season (or at least some are getting involved) but this year the number of private urban light shows seems to have fallen off.
But the real encouraging story of Christmas is the number of organisations and individuals going to lengths to make sure that no one misses out on seasonal enjoyment.

Vinnies and the Salvos are in the forefront as always but the true inspiration is the Christmas and Beyond luncheon, entertainment and gifts at the spacious Bible Church hall near Lithgow Hospital.
It’s all free and anyone is welcome but it wouldn’t be possible without the corporate sponsors and the selfless volunteers who give up their Christmas Day.
That’s the true spirit of Christmas.
Doing it in style
ERRANT motorists might feel they’re on an autobahn when they get pinged around here in future. Lithgow Highway Patrol cops have begun swanning about in the first of their flash BMWs. The Bavarian bruisers are replacing the sadly departed Ford and Holden muscle cars that wrought terror to countless culprits on our highways and byways. Just wondering though what the maintenance bills will do to the State Budget. And don’t even mention ‘resale’.
It’s getting colder outside
NO denying the women’s liberation army, aka #MeToo, has been a worthy organisation but like all worthy causes it attracts radical hangers on. Now those good old girls have unearthed unwelcome lyrics in a song that’s been regarded as innocent since winning an Academy Award in the 1940s. Now the alarming thing about this is that some radio stations and individuals who need to loosen up take this extremism seriously and no longer play ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. If that little ditty’s a problem for them just wait until they wake up to Rod Stewart and The Stones. It’ll be feminist Armageddon. Wonder where our 2LT stands on this.
The mess goes on
THE ongoing trenchwork all over Lithgow for water mains and the NBN has been blamed for the condition of the CBD footpaths. That’s reasonable but doesn’t forgive the total lack of attention to the industrial scale pigeon droppings in Whispering Lane (beside the former Exchange Hotel building). It’s being completely ignored by Council and if it gets much worse they’ll need a grader to shift it. It’s both extremely unsightly and decidedly unhealthy in this busy part of town. Makes you wonder if our councillors or council officers ever get into Main Street - on foot.
