The school will also be receiving new air conditioning and heaters for the classrooms. 

The Premier, MP Paul Toole, Lithgow City Council mayor Ray Thompson and Education Minister Rob Stokes went on a tour of the school and stopped by a stage one maths class. 

LPS Captains Mitchell Wallace and Amy Gordon showed the group around the grounds and answered questions about the school. 

The Premier spoke with students and staff, testing the young students’ knowledge of their times tables. 

“Thank you for allowing us to come into your classroom and allowing us to see the great learning that is happening with you and your teachers,” she said. 

“[It’s the] first time I’ve done a press conference in front of children like this, so thank you.” 

Education Minister Rob Stokes said a lot of the funding would be used to make sure that the buildings were properly preserved and looked after. 

“The air conditioning units will use solar panels and batteries so we can try and make sure the energy we are producing is really efficient and costs are kept down and cheap to operate as well.” 

The air conditioning units will be put in over the school holidays and will be ready for students in 2019. 

Lithgow Public School principal Mark Davies said the money meant everything to ensure the safety of students. 

“At the moment our fence could be easily entered, so this new fence will have controlled entry and exit points,” he said. 

“We have protections in place but this will just add to it, so we are super grateful.” 

The Department of Education’s director of educational leadership for the Lithgow network, Debbie-Lee Hughes, said it ensured the well-being of staff, students and community members. 

Education Minister Rob Stokes also sat down with some students and gave a surprise announcement. 

“Since we know you love reading we are going to donate some books to your library,” he said. 

Bathurst MP Paul Toole was struck with some harder questions. 

“Is Donald Trump your friend?” one of the students asked.

Ms Berejiklian said she was very proud of the way the school captains presented themselves. 

“Thank you for being outstanding school captains and thank you to your principal Mr Davies for running a great school,” she said.
