The patrol car made a u-turn and caught up with the vehicle at the intersection of Grand View Drive. When the patrol put its lights on, the court heard Riley, who was in the driver’s seat, pulled to the left, accelerated and overlook a vehicle on double white lines.
The speed increased to approximately 120km/h in the 60km/h zone. The highway patrol withdrew from the chase after they reported that the vehicle had pulled right, crossing solid unbroken lines and a painted median strip to overtake vehicles coming up to the speed camera gantry just outside the village.
The vehicle was later found at Amber Grove, South Bowenfels. Residents reported seeing a man running from the vehicle with a bag. DNA collected from inside the vehicle was matched to Riley.
Riley was found guilty of taking and driving a conveyance without the consent of the owner and for leading police on a pursuit (failing to stop and driving dangerously).
He will be eligible for release on December 8, 2020. His licence has also been suspended for three years.
