Reverend Matthew Trounce said the church had an amazing history. “The church is an amazing construction and design and is a fitting tribute to Charles and Emily Hoskins’ son who passed away”. The Church is dedicated to Charles and Emily’s eldest son Guildford, who passed away in a work accident. The land where the church now stands was a wasteland at the time filled with rubbish and waste but was slowly converted into the amazing church and grounds you see today.
Originally it was planned for the church to hold 1000 people however with escalating costs and planning changes, the church was redesigned to hold 450 people with the original foundations now laying underneath the sprawling gardens.
The church was built to bring everyone together and is still serving that purpose today.
- Reverend Matthew Trounce, Lithgow Uniting Church
Rev. Trounce said the church was originally built for everybody in the community to attend and he continues that tradition today. “Our church is a place for all to come and worship. Like most regional towns we’ve been struggling with an ageing congregation, but part of my appointment was to help the church reconnect with the community,” he said.

“While Sunday mornings aren’t as busy, the parish centre is busy seven days a week and we are really starting to get more youth back involved with the church,” he said. “Our ‘Fresh Expression’ programs aren’t like traditional church, and instead is focused on being more relevant to local people and the issues they face today”.
For the upcoming celebrations Rev. Trounce said that it will be a great day for the Hoskins family, the congregation and anyone who would like to attend. “The descendants of Charles and Emily will be here for the 90th anniversary, along with the Academy Singers chamber choir coming to perform,” he said. “Our service will be at 11am followed by a lunch in the church hall and everyone is welcome to attend”.
