In 37 years and it’s uncomfortably obvious that state of affairs also crept over the Mountains. Here in the valley our temperatures at times have been more appropriate to ‘real’ Winter and Spring sunshine has been in short supply. Even a lot of street trees are yet to return to life in an odd quirk of nature. Still, the cold and damp didn’t deter the big crowds who thronged to two big weekend events, the annual family fishing day at Lake Wallace and the youth concert extravaganza at Lithgow showground. Top marks to the organisers even if you slipped up on the weather.
Who is that mystery woman?
SOME things just can’t be rushed but sometimes that procrastination borders on the ridiculous.
Case in point the strange shabby treatment of Our Marjorie in Lithgow’s Cook Plaza.
It was very obvious that not too many were applauding when Council downgraded our Olympic Golden Girl to a less prominent pedestal.

But adding insult to injury the plaques and historic marker boards telling the story of Marjorie Jackson were never returned and she was left to confront the passing world in sad anonymity.
Weeks after the statue was relocated there was still an identity crisis as recently as the weekend and visitors were continuing to ask ‘who’s that?’.
Óne visitor recently asked the column if it was Betty Cuthbert.
There may be a good reason for this slack treatment but the public should know about it.
Meantime our new Mayor Ray Thompson might light a few fires and stir some overdue action out of the Mort Street bunker.
Comfort zone
STILL at Lake Wallace and Council is seeking public input to a management plan for this wonderful recreation facility. Serious consideration needs to be given in the plan to sealing short sections of the gravel road past the playground/picnic area and along the lake frontage in the vicinity of the baseball oval and adjoining area most popular with caravanners. Some inconsiderate motorists make life very uncomfortable when they stir up clouds of very fine dust in times of dry weather.
Now it’s the birds
FIRST we had the kangaroos coming in from the hills to rake around in our parks and playing fields when the drought impacted on natural food supply. Now after a little rain and limited greening we have hordes of white cockatoos chomping away. And they’re making a bigger mess than the roos. Quite obviously size really isn’t everything.
Corn Corner
THIS week’s corny contribution to conclude. Restaurants in Italy have come up with an exotic, limited edition and very pricey new lamb dish. It’s called Lamb Borgheni. OK, OK! But it sounds better than Mutton Borgheni. Don’t get it? Ask your neighbourhood revhead.
