Australia recorded its driest September on record, with many locations across the Central West following that trend.

Nyngan recorded by far the lowest rainfall during the month with just 1.8 millimetres recorded, which was well below the long-term average of 27.9mm.

Dubbo and Forbes were also extremely dry with just 6.8mm and 6.4mm of rain respectively, compared to long-term average of 44.3mm and 42mm.

While no locations in the region reached the long-term average, Lithgow came closest with 55.3mm recorded in a month that usually receives 58.9mm.

However, October is predicted to get off to a soggy start with rain expected from Wednesday to Friday right across the region.

Weatherzone meteorologist Jacob Cronje said Forbes, Parkes, Cowra and Orange should receive the most rain in the region.

“They could receive up to 60mm, but that’s an optimistic outlook, it’s safe to say 20-40mm,” he said.

“From Cobar east are the best falls of around 5-15mm. Everywhere should see something.”

Weatherzone data predicts up to 60mm of rain could be received in Lithgow from Wednesday to Friday, with up to 45mm expected in Wellington and 40mm in Nyngan.

While up to 35mm of rain could be received in Bathurst, Dubbo and Oberon, with 30mm predicted in Mudgee and Young.
