Crews were alerted to a fire at about 2am on Monday morning, September 24.
Explosions were heard by residents and fires crews from Lithgow, Portland and Katoomba attended the blaze, including both Rural Fire Service and Fire & Rescue NSW personnel.
Chifley-Lithgow Rural Fire Service operational officer Gary Hansen said reports of explosions were not uncommon in tip fires.
“The crews are working to keep the fire within the pit,” he said.
“There is no threat of it escaping.”
Lithgow City Council staff are expected on site this morning to open up the pit to allow fire crews to fully extinguish the blaze.
