Getting ever closer to a milestone, this year the Blackheath and District Horticultural Society is celebrating its 98th year.

The society is busy preparing for the Flower and Craft Show on September 22 and 23 in the Blackheath Community Hall, Great Western Highway (opposite the railway station).

The society has had a flower and craft show each year since its inauguration In 1920 except for the five years of World War Two.

The show offers a huge display of flowers and plants which includes pot plants, bonsai, azaleas, rhododendrons, daffodils, other bulbs, camellias, spring blossom, spring flowers and vegetables.

Come and admire the floral arrangements and, up the stairs, can enjoy the home cooking, spinning, weaving, felting, craft and needlework (embroidery, knitting, crochet and quilting).

The photography section relates to the theme of the flower show and finally the junior section offers many options in flowers, craft and cooking to provide an opportunity for children to take place in a community event.

Entries are taken on Friday, September 21 from 3-8pm and on the Saturday morning from 7-8.30am. The judging takes place from 9am until noon. The show is open noon-5pm on the Saturday and 8.30am-3pm on Sunday, September 22. The prizes are presented on Sunday at 3.30pm and exhibits are auctioned off at 3.50pm.

The society is grateful to its many sponsors and particularly to the Bendigo Bank, a sponsor since 2014 who this year presented a cheque for $950 for the flower show.

In 2020 the Blackheath & District will celebrate its centenary and is are proudly the oldest horticultural society or garden club in NSW.
